Invented 1919 by Russian electro physicist Lev Termen, the Theremin generates sound without being touched. Notoriously hard to play, it is one of the first electronic instruments.

Founded by Suzanne Fiol, director of Issue Project Room and Dorit Chrysler, sound artist and composer, the NY THEREMIN SOCIETY launched its concert series December 2nd 2005, bringing together skilled interpreters on Theremin, each presenting their solo works and joining in an experimental Theremin Orchestra.   The NY Theremin Society started to serve as a platform for  Thereminists and Enthusiasts and its mission statement soon evolved: namely to exchange, inspire and educate, as well as to help spread the visibility and application of this relatively young and unique instrument in the contemporary world of performance arts and music.  The NY Theremin Society was instrumental in the recreation of a Ten Piece Theremin Orchestra performing at the LA Disney Hall (emulating the first theremin orchestra concert taking place at Carnegie Hall in 1930.)  and a 17 piece ThereminOrchestra at PioneerWorks in 2016.   In residency at Pioneerworks in Red Hook, and most recently,  at  the Gaite Lyrique in Paris,  the NYTS has been growing its network with the founding of "L'EcoleTheremin," "KidCoolThereminSchool, "  providing  electronic music education  and Theremin workshops, concert series, consultation and community support.

The NYTS seeks to expand access to artistic expression and exploration.
